Gulfstream Park will debut its 10-table card room April 8. The room is open from noon to midnight every live race day and will remain open throughout the year.
The room is located on the south side of the Ten Palms restaurant, on the second floor of the clubhouse. After a $20 buy-in, seats are available on a first-come, first-served basis, with at least nine seats per table.
"The key to opening a successful card room, as it is with most everything else, is the support you get," Scott Poole, the card room manager, said. "And the support I've gotten here at Gulfstream has been incredible. Everyone here has been eager to get this room off to a good start, and their contributions will be apparent when we open."
Gulfstream's card room will offer three kinds of poker: Texas Holdem, Omaha Hi Lo, and Seven-Card Stud. The house rules are designed to provide inexperienced players a significant degree of protection against being penalized for honest mistakes. Therefore, a floor person's decision may be based on spirit of the game.
House rules are:
-Check and raise is allowed
-There will be a three-raise limit
-No string bets
-Players must protect their hand
-Players must act in turn
-Words and gestures are binding
-Seats will be held a maximum of 15 minutes
-English-only during active hands
-Must be 18 years old to participate
-No side bets allowed
