Magna Entertainment Corp. officials, fresh off of their initial foray into team racing on March 10 at Gulfstream, are planning a second round of their Super Track series, possibly as soon as next month in California.
"If we can come up with races that make sense we will run a series of races between Bay Meadows and Santa Anita," said Magna's (president) Jack Liebau. "Obviously we can't run Santa Anita stakes horses against Bay Meadows'." Liebau speculated the races would be held in mid-April, since "that's the only time the meet's overlap."
He added that the two Super Track races, in which Gulfstream's Miami Cruisers tied Santa Anita's Los Angeles Blaze, were "A good idea that next time will be better."
Although no figures were released for the unique point-spread wager that was offered on the races, total handle in the usual pools was more than 11% above comparable races last year. "We are very happy with the experiment and with the wagering, remarked Gulfstream president Scott Savin, "It bodes well for the future of the team concept."
