(from Portland Meadows)Lawanda earned her second stakes win of the meet Saturday at Portland Meadows when she flattened five others in the $10,000 Oregon Oaks.
"She was on go right from the start," said winning rider Clark Jones."I didn't want to go to the front, figuring we would sit off the speed. Well, as it turns out no one went and she took me there."
Setting fractions of :23 3/5 and :47 3/5 seconds in the early going of the 1 1/16-mile event, Royal Snowflight sat 1 1/2 lengths off her flank.
"When I asked her to run for me down the lane she didn't kick it into another gear, she kicked it into two more gears," Jones said. "She was awesome."
Completing the contest in 1:48 2/5 Lawanda won by 9 ΒΌ lengths and returned $4.00 and $2.10. There was no show wagering.
Fettles Klan got up for second to return $2.20. Royal Snowflight was third and Cascades Express was fourth.
Owned by Allen Floyd and trainer Jonathan Nance, Lawanda improves her record to 2-2-0 from six starts with $18,419 earned.
"I am thinking about the Preview Stakes and the [Oregon] Derby next," said Nance.
