Jockey Mike Luzzi was taken to North Shore Hospital complaining of lower back pain after being involved in a one-horse spill during Friday's third race at Aqueduct.
Luzzi was stalking the pace on even money favorite Manchurian when the horse suddenly broke down. Luzzi fell hard to the track and immediately sat up, but never got to his feet before being loaded onto the stretcher and taken by ambulance to the hospital.
Manchurian fractured both front sesamoids and was later euthanized after being vanned off.
