John and Susan Moore's Smokey Glacken will go for her third straight win in Saturday's 52nd running of the $150,000 Distaff Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) for fillies and mares at six furlongs at Aqueduct.
The 5-year-old daughter of Forestry
almost did not run for the Moores this year. Entered in last fall's Fasig-Tipton Kentucky November Selected Sale, the multiple grade III winner was removed from the sale at the request of Susan Moore.
"Susan loves to race and she couldn't stand the thought of anyone else racing Smokey Glacken," said John Moore, Susan's husband. "She also thought there was a chance she could be even better on the racetrack this year."
In her first couple of starts in 2005, Smokey Glacken did not seem to be herself. After off-the-board finishes in the Genuine Risk and Vagrancy, veterinarian Dr. Patty Hogan discovered a hairline fracture that only required rest. Just two months after her sixth in the Vagrancy, Smokey Glacken was back at the top of her game, winning a Saratoga allowance before capturing the grade III Floral Park at Belmont in the fall. She powered to an easy victory in the grade III Hurricane Bertie at Gulfstream last month going 6 1/2 furlongs, but even her connections still think she is better at six furlongs.
The goal of the season for Smokey Glacken, trained by Jimmy Jerkens, will be the six-furlong Princess Rooney at Calder on July 15, a grade II race worth $500,000. Moore, however, does not want to think too far past Saturday. After the Distaff, Smokey Glacken race schedule is likely to be kept light until the Princess Rooney. Moore who added that he and his wife definitely plan to sell Smokey Glacken at the end of this year.
