The National Thoroughbred Racing Association (NTRA) and Breeders' Cup Limited announced Tuesday disbursements totaling $483,465 from the NTRA Charities – Racing to the Rescue Fund to provide financial relief to members of the horse racing and breeding community who have been affected by Hurricane Katrina and Hurricane Rita.
The disbursement benefits the National HBPA Foundation aiding Louisiana horsemen; Churchill Downs Foundation aiding Fair Grounds staff and other employees of Churchill Downs Incorporated affected by the hurricanes; Canadian Red Cross and American Red Cross for "first response" efforts in affected Gulf Coast states; AAEP Foundation aiding equine rescue and recovery operations; and Thoroughbred Charities of America for aid to horsemen in Gulf Coast states.
The NTRA Charities – Racing to the Rescue Fund was supported by private contributions and also through the fundraising efforts of Arlington Park, Bay Meadows, Calder Race Course, California Exposition & State Fair, CDI Twin Spires Club, Churchill Downs, Colonial Downs, Del Mar, Delaware Park, Ellis Park, Hastings Race Course, Hollywood Park, Hoosier Park, Keeneland, Maryland Jockey Club, Meadowlands Racetrack, Mohegan Sun Casino, Mountaineer Park, Nebraska HBPA, New England HBPA, Northfield Park, Oak Tree at Santa Anita, Philadelphia Park, Pocono Downs, Suffolk Downs, Turfway Park, and others.
In addition, numerous industry organizations designated October 8, 2005, as "Racing to the Rescue Day" in support of hurricane victims. The 2005 Breeders' Cup World Championships at Belmont Park was also used as an additional platform to raise funds.
"We are extremely grateful to all the members of our industry and our fans for stepping up to assist members of the Gulf Coast horse communities and their animals in their time of need," said NTRA Commissioner and Breeders' Cup President D.G. Van Clief. "Special thanks should also go to Bessemer Trust, a valued NTRA/Breeders' Cup sponsor, for establishing and maintaining an account for the NTRA Charities – Racing to the Rescue Fund at no cost."
