Grade II Winner Altibr Dead
Shadwell Stable's grade II winner Altibr was euthanized March 13 because of complications from laminitis. The 6-year-old horse had been sent to a California clinic for minor knee surgery, and while there, he shattered a bone in his right hind leg while in a stall in mid-February. Surgery was performed, but his weight-bearing leg came down with laminitis.According to Shadwell manager Rick Nichols, Altibr was scheduled to race this year under the care of California trainer Neil Drysdale and begin stud next year. Shadwell, which has a division near Lexington and in England, is owned by Sheikh Hamdan.Bred by Indian Creek and Claude R. McGaughey III in partnership with Hint At Love Partnership, Altibr (Diesis -- Love's Reward, by Nonoalco) captured five of 16 races and earned $758,650. His big win came in the 2000 Shadwell Keeneland Turf Mile Stakes (gr. IIT) in course-record-equaling time of 1:33.72. He finished sixth in the Breeders' Cup Mile (gr. IT) in his final race.
