Mr. Silver and Up an Octave, after trading decisions in two previous clashes, face off again in Sunday's $100,000 Palm Beach Stakes (gr. III) for 3-year-olds on the Gulfstream Park turf. Eight colts are entered.
Jockey Cornelio Velasquez gets the return call on Thorobeam Farm and Henry Mast's Mr. Silver for trainer Eddie Plesa Jr. in the field of eight. John Velazquez is aboard Vinery Stable's Up an Octave for trainer Todd Pletcher. Mr. Silver and Up an Octave finished second and third respectively, last out in the Hallandale Beach Stakes over the course Feb. 12.
Mr. Silver is a roan/gray colt by Concorde's Tune purchased for $120,000 at the OBS February 2-year-old sales. He has been highly consistent in five starts on turf by using his natural speed effectively to dictate the pace when possible.
Up an Octave won the first tilt with Mr. Silver in the Kris S. Stakes at Calder Dec. 10 when he rallied from off the pace to run down Mr. Silver in the deep stretch. The latter gave way grudgingly to finish third, beaten only 1 ¼ lengths. Up an Octave, by Brahms
, was a $140,000 Keeneland yearling sales purchase.
Frank Calabrese's homebred Lewis Michael finished fifth as the favorite in the Hallandale Beach, but encountered trouble on the inside in the first turn. The Wayne Catalano-trained son of Rahy
had finished a good third to undefeated Barbaro in the Tropical Park Derby (gr. IIIT) at Calder on New Year's Day, with Mr. Silver fourth in that race. Rene Douglas gets the mount Sunday.
Another contender in the Palm Beach will be Puglisi Stable and Steve Klesaris' Diabolical, making his first start since finishing a distant second to Barbaro in the Laurel Futurity Nov. 19 in his grass course debut. Diabolical is a son of Artax
purchased for $300,000 at the OBS February 2-year-old sales who was three times stakes-placed in four main-track starts prior to the Laurel race. Jeremy Rose handles the riding chores.$100,000 Palm Beach Stakes (gr. IIIT, Race 10, 5:14 p.m.), 3-Year-Olds, 1 1/8 Miles (turf)
