Friends of Bay Meadows, a citizen group sponsoring an effort to place the track's redevelopment plan before the voters in San Mateo, Calif., is holding a fundraiser to help meet legal costs March 11.The group recently sued the San Mateo County Elections Office and the city of San Mateo to get its referendum on the ballot after the county registrar ruled that the effort had not qualified by gathering the required number of signatures. Bay Meadows Land Co., owner of the property, plans a large-scale redevelopment project that would result in the demolition of the track.American Legion Hall Post 82 in San Mateo, 130 S. Blvd., will host the "Put It on the Ballot" fundraiser. There will be both a brunch (10 a.m. to 2 p.m.) and an evening gala (5 to 9 p.m.), each featuring a large silent auction.
Live racing at Bay Meadows Race Course would end with the conclusion of the San Mateo County Fair race meet Aug. 18, 2008, under a dates plan given preliminary approval by the California Horse Racing Board's strategic planning committee Sept. 20.
