Landon Manning, Saratoga Turf Writer, Dies

Landon C. Manning, a former Turf writer and author, died Feb. 22 in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. He was 88.

A native of Springfield, Mass., he became a newspaper reporter after being discharged from the Army in 1946. He had graduated from Culver Military Academy and attended Penn State University.

He served as the Turf editor for The Saratogian from 1957 until his retirement in the 1990s. He had a harness handicapping column in The Saratogian in which he was known as 'Lucky Louie.'

Manning was the author of two books about horse racing, "The Noble Animals: Tales of the Saratoga Turf" and "Extra Sugar for Kelso."

He has no surviving relatives.
