Kingmambo, who missed part of the 2005 breeding season because of various ailments, covered his first mare Feb. 13 at William S. Farish's Lane's End Farm near Versailles, Ky.
"We're limiting him to one a day and to mostly shareholder mares," said Farish's son, Bill, Feb. 20. "He's covered five mares and is doing fine."
Kingmambo, who stands for $300,000, suffered a leg injury last February and was treated for an arthritic condition in his lower neck. He also showed signs of an EPM infection. He covered 37 mares last year.
Sixteen-year-old Kingmambo (Mr. Prospector -- Miesque, by Nureyev) has sired 57 stakes winners. His 2005 stakes winners included European group I winners Alkaased, Divine Proportions, and Virginia Waters, as well as grade III winners Rey de Café and Top Commander. Alkaased also won last year's Japan Cup (Jpn-I).
Farish said if all goes well, Kingmambo could cover as many as 65 mares.
