Ohio Champion Joanies Bella Dead
Joanies Bella, Ohio champion 2-year-old filly of 2001, died of colic Feb. 14 at Rood and Riddle Equine Hospital near Lexington. The 7-year-old daughter of Mercer Mill foaled a Pleasantly Perfect filly a month earlier."Her new foal is beautiful," said Dan Martin, who bred and co-owned Joanies Bella with Jerry Ayres. "We were getting ready to breed her to Afleet Alex."Racing for the two men, Joanies Bella won six of 11 starts and earned $274,265 while trained by Tim Hamm. As a 2-year-old, she won the Arlington-Washington Lassie Stakes (gr. III), the Tah Dah Stakes by 12 1/4 lengths, the Best of Ohio Juvenile Fillies Championship Stakes by a dozen lengths, the Pepsi Bassinet Stakes, and set a 4 1/2-furlong track record at Hawthorne. Joanies Bella, who is out of the Northrop mare Bello Senorita, also was a stakes winner as a 3-year-old.Joanies Bella's other foal, a 2-year-old Wild Again colt named Bobbys Holiday, is in training in Ocala, Fla.
