The ploy by Magic Millions' senior staff to lure Sydney-based bloodstock agent Kieran Moore all the way across Australia to visit the Perth yearling sale, which ended Wednesday, proved a masterstroke.
Moore, who had never had reason to be in Perth before in his life, spent Aus$200,000 on his first buy on day one. On day two, he did it again, this time going as high as $210,000, a record for the Western Australia sale.
Moore broke the previous sale record (which he had set only 24 hours earlier) when he paid the $210,000 for a Western Australia-bred daughter of prominent local star sire Key Business (by former Breeders' Cup Juvenile, gr. I, winner Success Express). The big, racy filly is from the mare Cold Fusion. Consigned by Rangeview Stud, the filly is a full sister to Australian group III winner Hot Shot Brother and to listed winner Cool Business. Other members of the filly's family include group I Melbourne Cup winner Rogan Josh group I Railway Stakes hero Machine Gun Tom.
Moore, who was sincerely blown away by the quality of horse on sale in the West, said: "She's an extremely attractive filly. She was a nice type and comes from a great running family." And he noted: "We've got another family member, a 2-year-old from Cool Business, and he won a trial in Melbourne this morning too."
Later in the day, Ascot group I winner and multiple Australian group I winner Choisir was responsible for the Aus$125,000 filly bought by Victoria-based Slade Bloodstock. She was from the mare Deanna's Smile and was consigned by Gervase Park Stud as agent for G&A Forth.
Overall during the two-day Magic Millions Perth yearling sale, 287 lots were sold for Aus$11,162,000 (up 39.3% on last year's total of Aus$8,015,000 for 256 sold). The Aus$38,892 average was up 24.2% from last year's Aus$31,309. And the clearance rate was 81.3% compared to 79.8% last year.
Every yearling sale in Australia and New Zealand since Keeneland's September yearling sale in 2005 have recorded record gains
