The ominous forecast for the first major winter storm of the season forced Aqueduct to cancel Sunday's live program. The decision to cancel was made at 1 p.m. Eastern on Saturday.
It is the second cancellation at Aqueduct this year. Racing was also disrupted on Jan. 15, when overnight temperature dropped from 56 degrees to 28 degrees, causing icy conditions.
Meadowlands has also canceled harness racing Sunday due to the storm. There is no simulcasting at Meadowlands or Monmouth, either.
Sunday's card will be run in its entirety on Thursday, Feb. 16. There will be no entries taken on Sunday, and Thursday's condition book races will be extra races for Friday, Feb. 17.
It has been an unusually mild winter at Aqueduct – January was the third warmest in recorded history – but the threatening storm appears a lock to hit the area. Forecasts call for from six to 12 inches of snow falling overnight and into Sunday. Additionally, high winds, near-blizzard conditions, and coastal flooding are also expected.
Aqueduct will resume racing on Wednesday, Feb. 15. First race post is 12:30 p.m.
