Apprentice jockey David Lopez escaped serious injury Thursday after he was unseated from his mount, Obi Wan, in the third race at Aqueduct. In a terrifying incident, Lopez, 24, was thrown over the rail when Obi Wan ran up behind Thundering Success and Kris's Affair.Lopez was taken to a local hospital after his fall complaining of pain in his ribs. But after examination, it was determined that he suffered no fractures."He's pretty sore," said Jorge Velasquez, the Hall of Fame rider who is now Lopez's agent. "He's going to take this weekend off to recuperate and, hopefully, he'll be ready to go Wednesday."Lopez came to Aqueduct on Friday to go over films with stewards, fellow riders and his agent.Following an inquiry into the incident, there was no change in the order of finish. It appeared that Lopez was at fault for putting Obi Wan in a spot where there was not sufficient room."I'm going to give him some tips on what he did wrong and show him how to do it right," Velasquez said. "Everyone learns from their mistakes."Since beginning his career in September at Arlington Park, Lopez has amassed an 11-14-27 record from 265 mounts.
