Apprentice jockey David Michael Lopez was taken to North Shore University Hospital Thursday after he was thrown from his mount, Obi Wano, in the third race at Aqueduct.
With Thundering Success and jockey Kyle Kaenel on the inside and Kris's Affair and jockey Ramon Dominguez battling for the lead on the outside, Obi Wan and Lopez tried to come through a hole on the rail inside the eighth-pole. The hole closed quickly, and Obi Wan bounced off the rail as Lopez hurtled over it.
After a stewards' inquiry, Thundering Success' victory was upheld.
George Velazquez, agent for Lopez, said the jockey was sore, but in good condition and had returned home when x-rays revealed he had no broken bones from the fall.
"He's a tough kid and I wouldn't be surprised if he's able to ride tomorrow," said Velazquez, who added that Lopez had three mounts scheduled for the Feb. 10 Aqueduct card.
A decision will be made Friday morning as to whether Lopez will complete the races.
