Lava Man was named the 2005 California-bred Horse of the Year in voting by the California Thoroughbred Breeders Association, it was announced at the CTBA's annual awards dinner Feb. 7.

The 5-year-old gelded son of Slew City Slew is out of the Nostalgia's Star mare Li'l Ms. Leonard and was bred by Lonnie Arterburn, Eve Kuhlmann and Kim Kuhlmann. Steve, Tracy and David Kenly's STD Racing Stable and Jason Wood own Lava Man.

Lava Man earlier was named champion older male for a 2005 campaign that included back-to-back wins in the Hollywood Gold Cup (gr. I) and Californian (gr. II). His earnings of $774,103 last year led all Cal-breds.

Lava Man has picked up in 2006 where he left off, winning last month's $1 million Sunshine Millions Classic, his eighth win in 28 starts, to become the leading active Cal-bred earner at $1,584,706. He ranks 13th on the all-time list.
