Keeneland officials have again cancelled the July selected yearling sale in 2006, announcing that all yearlings will be sold this year during the September yearling sale.
The 2006 September Yearling Sale will be held Sept. 11-24. The deadline for entries is May 1.
The July selected sale was put on hiatus in 2003 following the devastating impact of Mare Reproductive Loss Syndrome (MRLS) on Kentucky's 2002 foal crop. The July sale was not conducted again in 2004 and 2005, years when Keeneland realized world record gross receipts for the September sale.
"The September sale is now the global marketplace for Thoroughbred yearlings," said Keeneland's Director of Sales Geoffrey Russell. "Last year's September sale was the highest grossing Thoroughbred auction in the world. The strength of the middle market - catalog books 3 through 5 - was especially gratifying. Prices for yearlings catalogued in those books had their largest increases in 2004, and were up another 23.3 percent in 2005.
"Additionally, participation from foreign buyers, representing 19 countries, was extremely strong," he said. "All of these indicators tell us the market continues to clearly dictate its preference for a single yearling sale - in September - at Keeneland."
The 2005 September Yearling Sale erased many sales and industry records and established a world record $384,349,900 in gross receipts. The average price of $108,420 and median price of $40,000 were both sales records. Forty yearlings sold for $1 million or more, an industry record.
Among those 40 yearlings was the September sale record Storm Cat
colt out of Tranquility Lake, which sold for $9.7 million to John Ferguson, who signed the ticket on behalf of Sheikh Mohammed.
The colt was consigned by Mill Ridge Sales, agent for Mr.and Mrs. Martin J. Wygod.
