Wednesday surgery for Stevie Wonderboy.
Stevie Wonderboy, 2-year-old male champion of 2005 who suffered a condylar fracture of the right front ankle in a workout at Hollywood Park Monday, is scheduled to undergo surgery Wednesday morning, trainer Doug O'Neill said.
The surgery, which will entail a single screw being inserted into the ankle, will be performed by Dr. Ted Simpson at Hollywood Park.
Stevie Wonderboy, who had finished second to Brother Derek in the San Rafael Stakes (gr. II) in his 3-year-old debut Jan. 14, had worked six furlongs in 1:13 3/5 Monday when a filling was noticed in his ankle. Subsequent X-rays revealed the fracture.
Stevie Wonderboy, a Kentucky-bred son of Stephen Got Even
owned by Merv Griffin, will out of training for 90 days, and is expected to return to the races later this year.
A winner of four of six career starts, Stevie Wonderboy won the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) and Del Mar Futurity (gr. II) last year at 2.
