Gilbert Campbell's homebred Blazing Sword has been retired from racing because of recurring foot problems. The 7-year-old gelding will reside at his place of his birth, Campbell's Stonehedge Farm South near Williston, Fla.

Blazing Sword, who was Florida-bred champion 2-year-old male in 1996, won six stakes and placed in a dozen others. His graded wins came in the Washington Park (gr. II) and Widener (gr. III) Handicaps and the Calder Derby (gr. III). Trained by Kathleen O'Connell, Blazing Sword was retired with 11 wins from 45 starts and earnings of $1,184,055.

Stonehedge also is home for Blazing Sword's sire, Sword Dance, and dam, Demetroula (by Singular). Demetroula is carrying a full sibling to Blazing Sword and is due on March 20. She is booked back to Sword Dance.
