Grade II Winner Eye of the Tiger Retired
Eye of the Tiger, a grade II winner and a solid fifth in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I), has been retired from racing.A 6-year-old son of American Chance, Eye of the Tiger won the Washington Park (gr. II) and Affirmed (gr. III) Handicaps and ran third in the Carter (gr. I) Handicap to Pico Central and Strong Hope. He also placed in the Coolmore Lexington (gr. II), Swaps (gr. II), and San Pedro Stakes. In the 2003 Kentucky Derby, he finished just 4 3/4 lengths behind winner Funny Cide. Eye of the Tiger retired with five wins from 19 starts and earnings of $535,679 for breeder/owner John Gunther.A half-brother to stakes winner Wildwood Flower, Eye of the Tiger is out of the Phone Trick mare Dial a Trick, who is a half-sister to graded winner Fighting Fantasy and the dam of grade I winner Snow Ridge. Eye of the Tiger, who had been out of action since the summer because of suspensory problems, will be sent to Gunther's Glennwood Farm near Versailles, Ky. Breeding plans are undecided.
