Greeley's Galaxy, who split the field in the Malibu Stakes (gr. I) in his first start in 19 months Dec. 26, is the 120-pound high weight among nine entered for Saturday's $200,000 San Fernando Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. II) at Santa Anita.
The San Fernando comes up light in stakes winners this year. There are a pair of entries in the field, the second leg of the Strub Series for 4-year-olds at 1 1/16 miles. Canteen and Sort It Out race for Stonerside Stable and Hancock while Osidy and Greeley's Galaxy run for B. Wayne Hughes.
Trained by Warren Stute, Greeley's Galaxy has won three of seven starts including last year's 1 1/8-mile Illinois Derby (gr. II) by 9 ½ lengths while earning $358,480. The Mr. Greeley
colt finished seventh in the seven-furlong Malibu, 9 1/4 lengths behind Proud Tower Too, who is skipping the San Fernando.
Turf specialist Osidy, winner of last year's Will Rogers (gr. IIIT) on the lawn, will try the main track once again for Hughes and trainer Richard Mandella after finishing sixth in the Malibu.
Doug Cauthen's Unbridled Energy exits a fifth-place finish in the Malibu for Mandella and the son of Unbridled's Song
figures to show much improvement at the longer San Fernando distance. Garrett Gomez stays with Unbridled Energy.
Swing Your Partner won back-to-back allowance starts at the recent Hollywood Park meeting for trainer Tim Yakteen. The San Fernando is the stakes debut for the son of Wheaton
Likewise, Super Horse Inc.'s Distorted, a Distorted Humor
colt, comes out of back-to-back allowance wins at Hollywood and is also making his initial stakes start for Patrick Gallagher.
Canteen, who has won two of his last three races, makes a big jump into graded stakes competition for trainer Neil Drysdale. Patrick Valenzuela rides.$200,000 San Fernando Breeders' Cup Stakes (gr. II, Race 8, 4:10 p.m.), 4-year-olds, 1 1/16 miles
