Under jockey Jerry Bailey, Gerald W. Leigh's 6-year-old homebred mare Innuendo stalked early leader Alybgood before drawing off in the stretch to win the $200,000 Orchid Handicap (gr. IIT) by 3 1/2 lengths, Saturday at Gulfstream Park. For Bailey, the win marks his 12th in a stakes on the current Gulfstream meet, tying his own record. Innuendo completed the 1 1/2 miles in 2:25.24 over a firm turf course.
Bailey and Innuendo allowed Alybgood a comfortable early lead before beginning to pressure the leader after a half-mile run in :49.54. Innuendo began a serious run approaching the third turn and kicked clear with a quarter-mile to run, lengthening her lead to the wire. Windsong finished second, another three lengths ahead of Aiglonne. Alybgood tired to finish last.
The win is the second stakes win of the meet for Innuendo, who won February's 1 3/8-mile The Very One Handicap (gr. IIIT) by four lengths with Bailey in the irons. Innuendo (Caerleon -- Infamy, by Shirley Heights) earned $120,000 for the win, her seventh in 16 starts.
Sent off as the prohibitive 2-5 favorite and with no show wagering due to the four-horse field, the Christophe Clement-trained Innuendo returned $2.80 and $2.10. Windsong paid $2.10 to place. The winning exacta combination returned $10.20. (Chart, Equibase
