TOC Hosts Free Ownership Workshop Jan. 21
California Horse Racing Board Chairman Richard Shapiro and owner J. Paul Reddam are among speakers scheduled for "Ownership 101," a free workshop on racehorse ownership Jan. 21 at Santa Anita Park. The seminar, hosted by Thoroughbred Owners of California, will run from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. The event will present an insider's look at what it takes to become a successful racehorse owner, including acquiring a racehorse, choosing a trainer, and costs of ownership. Attendees will then have a chance to meet some of the trainers stabled at Santa Anita and visit their operations. Since his appointment in 2004, Shapiro has been extremely active as a CHRB member, quickly ascending to the chairmanship. Drawing on a long family association with California horse racing, Shapiro will share some personal experiences and talk about the ways one can join the ownership ranks. Reddam, founding president of CashCall, a consumer lending company, has campaigned such stars as Wilco, Swept Overboard, Ten Most Wanted, Elloluv, and Momentum. He will be speaking about a critical part of the ownership experience - trainer selection. Also speaking are owners Peggy Johnson and Chuck Stoll, who will discuss the various costs involved in ownership. Johnson has been involved in racing for more than 15 years and has been speaking at TOC seminars since 1997. Stoll, who races in partnership with Johnson, is a Los Angeles Superior Court judge in Glendale. Moderating for the panel of speakers will be HRTV's Aaron Vercruysse. The seminar will begin at Clockers' Corner at the west end of Santa Anita's grandstand. Although it is free, reservations are suggested and can be made by calling TOC at (626) 574-6620. Santa Anita is located at 285 W. Huntington Drive in Arcadia.
