Leading Kentucky Derby (gr. I) candidate Point Given worked seven furlongs at 1:24 4/5 at Santa Anita on Friday, just before the first race. "I clocked him 1:23 3/5, going out a mile in 1:37 3/5," said trainer Bob Baffert. Dana Barnes was aboard the son of Thunder Gulch, who is pointing for the March 17 San Felipe Stakes (gr. II), which will be his first start of 2001.
Earlier Friday, Baffert worked Dubai World Cup (UAE-I) candidate Captain Steve over a track he called deep and tiring. "I wish I'd have worked Captain Steve later in the day when Point Given went out," Baffert said. "He would have gone much faster." Clockers gave Captain Steve a time of 1:26 4/5 for seven furlongs.
Point Given came up a nose short of Macho Uno in last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) and finished second in voting for an Eclipse Award. The Thoroughbred Corp. runner won the subsequent Hollywood Futurity (gr. I) and has finished first or second in all six of his career starts.
