Chief Racetrack Veterinarian Removed in Kentucky

Dr. Gary Wilson, Kentucky's chief racetrack veterinarian, was given a letter Dec. 23 stating his services were no longer needed, according to Mark York, executive director of communications for the state Environmental and Public Protection Cabinet, which oversees the Kentucky Horse Racing Authority.

York declined to elaborate on the specifics of the letter. "It's a personal matter and I can't discuss it any further," he said.

A call to Wilson was not immediately returned.

Wilson had voiced his concern over the condition of the state's racetrack veterinary program to the KHRA in recent months, citing the need for additional veterinary staff, increased pay for staff, and better equipment to more closely monitor horses at racetracks.

Wilson was named chief veterinarian in July, replacing Dr. Mitzi Fisher, who retired after more than 20 years.
