Former trainer Roy "Little Tex" Colosia, 84, died Dec. 20 at his home in Arcadia after a long illness, according to his stepson, Joe Keating.
Born in San Antonio on Sept. 29, 1921, Colosia worked in Kentucky for legendary stables such as Calumet Farm and Greentree Stud, and broke Kentucky Derby winners Whirlaway, Shut Out, Pensive and Determine.
He trained a public stable in Southern California in the late 1940s. His career as a trainer ended in 1969 after a serious auto accident. He worked in the pari-mutuel department until his retirement in 1986.
