First Samurai, a multiple grade I-winning 2-year-old son of Giant's Causeway
, stretched his legs Sunday at Gulfstream Park, working three furlongs in a brisk :35.
It was the fastest of 13 three-furlong works on the day.
Owned by Bruce Lunsford and Lansdon Robbins III, First Samurai is trained by Frankie Brothers. He has not started since a third-place finish behind Stevie Wonderboy and Henny Hughes in the Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I).
His first recoreded work since the Breeders' Cup came at Gulfstream Dec. 12 when he got three furlongs in :37 1/5, breezing.
Out of the Dixieland Band
mare Freddie Frisson, First Samurai was bred in Kentucky by John D. Gunther. He won his first four starts by a combined margin of 18 1/2 lengths, including victories in the Hopeful Stakes (gr. I) at Saratoga and the Champagne Stakes (gr. I) at Belmont Park.
First Samurai is a Florida Derby (gr. I) early bird nominee and is eligible to take part in Gulfstream's series of races for 3-year-olds that begins with the Aventura Stakes Jan. 7 and continues through the nine-furlong Florida Derby April 1.
