Randy Wehrman, stakes coordinator at Turfway Park in Northern Kentucky, will serve as racing secretary at Colonial Downs in Virginia for the 2006 season.

Wehrman will remain at Turfway, whose live season ends two months before the start of the Colonial meet in June. Turfway then reopens in early September, less than a month after the Colonial meet ends.

Wehrman has been at Turfway since 2001, and serves as a placing judge as well. He also is stakes coordinator at River Downs in Ohio.

Wehrman also worked as a racing official at Keeneland in Kentucky the past two years; was racing secretary at Charles Town Races & Slots from 1997-99; and was assistant racing secretary at Penn National Race Course before he got the job at Charles Town.

"I'm thrilled to have Randy on board," Ian Woolnaugh, Colonial general manager, said in a release. "It's a new era at Colonial Downs, and Randy's experience and contacts will be a big asset in helping us to continue to present high-quality turf racing."

Colonial will offer two $1-million grass stakes next year: the June 24 Colonial Cup and the July 15 Virginia Derby (gr. IIT). They are the first two legs of the $5-million "Grand Slam of Grass." The other two legs are the Secretariat Stakes (gr. IT) at Arlington Park and the John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT) at Churchill Downs.
