Wilson First Female to Win Woodbine Riding Title
Jockey Emma-Jayne Wilson put an exclamation point on her 2005 riding title with four wins on the final card of Woodbine's 167-day, eight-month Thoroughbred meet on Sunday.Wilson, North America's leading apprentice rider, won the afternoon's first (One for Carmen), fourth (Backatcha), seventh (Dancer's Guest) and 11th (Just Rushing) races to give her 175 victories and the leading rider title at the Toronto oval.She is the first woman to ever capture a Woodbine meet in its 50 years.Wilson, who set a record for most mounts in a year at Woodbine with 1,095, also took the purse earnings title with $7,484,513."It was a helluva season," Wilson said. "I have to thank everyone for their great support. Let's do it again next year."Corey Fraser, also an apprentice for part of the year, was the second leading rider with 136 wins. Patrick Husbands was third with 118 victories.Husbands won both stakes races on the last program, guiding Bad Hat and Seattlespectacular to wins in the $125,800 Kingarvie Stakes and $126,600 Valedictory Stakes, respectively.Sid Attard captured his second consecutive and fourth Woodbine training title overall with 68 wins. Robert Tiller was second with 57 wins, while Mark Casse was third with 56. Reade Baker, while finishing fourth in wins with 54, was the purse earnings leader with $3,993,996.Sam-Son Farm topped Woodbine's owner standings with purse earnings of $1,923,870. Melnyk Racing Stable, Inc. was second with $1,840,797 and a meet-leading 37 wins. Stronach Stables was third with $1,716,352.Relaxed Gesture, with his win in the Pattison Canadian International (Can-I), led all horses with $1.2 million in earnings. Five horses shared the win title. Friendly Theresa and Oye Vai joined stakes winners Are You Serious, Schooner Bay and Top Ten List atop the standings. Each had five victories on the year.Each of Woodbine's five big races had a different winner.Wild Desert won the Queen's Plate, Relaxed Gesture captured the Pattison Canadian International, Leroidesanimaux scored in the Atto Mile (Can-I), Jambalaya won the Breeders' Stakes and Gold Strike tallied the Labatt Woodbine Oaks.
