While much of the attention has been rightfully focused on Santa Ynez and Las Virgenes Stakes winner Golden Ballet leading into Saturday's Grade I Santa Anita Oaks, the California-bred Moscow Ballet filly hasn't exactly scared anyone out of the 1 1/16-mile event.
Golden Ballet, winner of four of seven starts for $346,895, missed a scheduled work this week due to the inclement weather conditions. Trainer Jenine Sahadi appeared unconcerned and said that the probable Oaks favorite will gallop into the race.
"She won't be working (Wednesday) and that was the only day we could have worked her," said Sahadi.
Expected to challenge Golden Ballet will be Aswhatilldois, who will be shipping in from Golden Gate Fields for trainer Jim Hilling.
"This is right spot at the right time," said Hilling.
The Irish-bred Aswhatilldois has won three of seven starts for earnings of $79,570, including two of three U.S. starts. Aswhatilldois was a nine-length winner in her last start in the $100,000 California Oaks, a 1 1/16-mile event on the Golden Gate turf course.
"We're coming down there with no false expectations," said Hilling. "If we can run fourth against that group, we'll be very happy."
Flute will make her first start for Bobby Frankel since breaking her maiden Jan 4 in her second start. Flute passed the entry box for the Feb. 10 Las Virgenes but was scratched.
"I didn't like the (far outside No 9) post so I scratched her," Frankel said.
Probable to the Santa Anita Oaks, with riders: Golden Ballet, Chris McCarron; Affluent, Gray Stevens; Collect Call, Laffit Pincay Jr.; Flute, Victor Espinoza; Aswhatilldois, Adelberto Lopez; Ella's Pal, David Flores; Glaringray, Tyler Baze and Two Item Limit, Eddie Delahoussaye. Possibles include: Desiraies My Candy, no rider, and Dawaytogold, no rider.
