Trickey Trevor, the 7-5 favorite, led from gate to wire under jockey Russell Baze to win Friday's $100,000 Forty-Niner Handicap at Golden Gate Fields.
The Jerry Hollendorfer trainee completed the 1 1/16-mile distance in an impressive 1:41 1/5 on a wet fast track to deliver a 2 1/2-length win over Melanyhasthepapers, ridden by Chad Schvaneveldt. It was another two lengths to third-place finisher My Creed (Modesto Linares).
The dark bay Florida-bred son of Demaloot Demashoot earned $55,000 for owners Hollendorfer and Jerry and Dan Jelladian. The victory was his 16th in 31 starts and pushed his earnings to $410,435.
A top sprinter who owns at track record at Bay Meadows – five furlongs in 56.01 seconds – Trickey Trevor is now 2-for-2 in middle distance races.
"We've got him stretched out," said Hollendorfer. "It might be kind of foolish to shorten him up now."
Breaking from the outside post in a field of six, the 6-year-old horse took the lead in the opening strides, crossing over to lead while racing near the rail through fractions of :22 3/5, :45 4/5 and 1:09 4/5. Racing on the outside of the inside horse, Melanyhasthepapers, Trickey Trevor opened up as the field set down for the stretch run and held a 3 1/2-length lead with a furlong to go. He held sway under urging from Baze as Melanyhasthepapers made some progress late without threatening.
Trickey Trevor carried 117 pounds to victory and paid $4.80, $3.40 and $2.80. Melanyhasthepapers returned $5 and $3.20. My Creed's show was $4.60.
The 119-pound high weight Ace Blue finished fourth as the second choice while Easy Million and Masterpiece trailed. Speedsters Bilo and Saint Buddy scratched.
"Everything went perfect today," said Baze. "The other speed scratched and he loves the mud. He's doing great right now. He's wicked-fast if you want to send him but he'll relax if you take a hold."
Bred by the Edward Wiest Family 98, Trickey Trevor is out of the Silver Deputy
