Purses at Charles Town Races will increase another 5% for the condition book that begins March 15, which means daily average purses at the West Virginia track will be $125,000.

When the track shut down briefly in the mid-1990s, purses averaged about $22,000 a day. But it reopened with video lottery terminals, and later has added reel-spinning slot machines. Since that time, it seems each condition book has set a record in terms of daily average purses.

Beginning with the fifth condition book, an open $2,500 claiming race at 1 1/16 miles or longer will go for $7,600. An open allowance race "going long" will be worth $24,700. The purse for a $5,000 claiming event will be $12,500.

Charles Town races four days a week (Thursday through Sunday).
