Grayson-Jockey Club Sets Research Projects

The Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation has allocated more than $1 million for 12 projects this year. Much of the research involves two-year projects that will be funded along with five carryover initiatives from 2000.Projects approved by the board of directors Feb. 26 are:o Identification of immunology proteins specific to strangles.o Analysis of semen in unexplained fertility cases.o Practical equine DNA vaccination.o The possible relationship between suspensory apparatus and condylar fracture.o Solutions to problems of the cecum, an organ related to dangerous colic cases.o The role of volatile fatty acids in equine gastric ulcers.o Development of a refined equine model for equine protozoal myeloencephalitis.o Basis for the treatment of flexural deformities.o Further evaluation of shoes and impact trauma.o Nitric oxide's possible involvement in delayed uterine clearance.o Muscle glycogen metabolism in horses.o The aspects of extracorpeal shock-wave therapy.In the past 20 years, the foundation has contributed about $9 million to fund 163 projects at 27 universities.
