Grayson-Jockey Club Sets Research Projects

The Grayson-Jockey Club Research Foundation has allocated more than $1 million for 12 projects this year. Much of the research involves two-year projects that will be funded along with five carryover initiatives from 2000.
Projects approved by the board of directors Feb. 26 are:
o Identification of immunology proteins specific to strangles.
o Analysis of semen in unexplained fertility cases.
o Practical equine DNA vaccination.
o The possible relationship between suspensory apparatus and condylar fracture.
o Solutions to problems of the cecum, an organ related to dangerous colic cases.
o The role of volatile fatty acids in equine gastric ulcers.
o Development of a refined equine model for equine protozoal myeloencephalitis.
o Basis for the treatment of flexural deformities.
o Further evaluation of shoes and impact trauma.
o Nitric oxide's possible involvement in delayed uterine clearance.
o Muscle glycogen metabolism in horses.
o The aspects of extracorpeal shock-wave therapy.
In the past 20 years, the foundation has contributed about $9 million to fund 163 projects at 27 universities.
