Live Oak Plantation's My Typhoon, purchased as a weanling for $2.9 million, heads a competitive field of nine in Saturday's $150,000-added Mrs. Revere (gr. IIT) for 3-year-old fillies on the turf at Churchill Downs.
My Typhoon will be searching for her first graded stakes victory in the 1 1/16-mile race on "Pat's Day," a daylong celebration of the career of retired jockey Pat Day sponsored by Commonwealth Bank & Trust Company.
My Typhoon brings an impeccable turf pedigree into the Mrs. Revere for trainer Bill Mott, the all-time leader in wins and stakes victories at Churchill Downs. The daughter of European champion
Giant's Causeway is out of Urban Sea, winner of the 1993 Prix de l'Arc De Triomphe (Fr-I), and is a half-sister to Epsom Derby (Eng-I) winner and European champion Galileo.
Assistant trainer Kenny McCarthy said the filly was very anxious early in her career, but seems to be relaxing more as she gains racing experience.
"She's willing to settle a little bit more and be a little bit easier on herself the first part of the race," he said. "As she goes through this year and on through the winter, we hope she'll be able to settle even some more and be a better filly again next year."
The Irish-bred My Typhoon brings a career record of 3-2-2 in eight races and earnings of $307,830 into the Mrs. Revere. She has notched stakes victories in the Hilltop Breeders' Cup at Pimlico and the Virginia Oaks at Colonial Downs. She was third to Luas Line in Belmont's Garden City Breeders' Cup (gr. IT).
Robby Albarado will ride My Typhoon, who was installed as the 8-5 favorite.
Other contenders for the Mrs. Revere include Everest Stable's Isla Cozzene, winner of the Hawthorne Oaks; Martin S. Schwartz's Italian import Silver Cup, winner of the Italian One Thousand Guineas in July; and Walter "Buddy" New's Flying Circle, who won the Open Mind at five furlongs over Churchill Downs' Matt Winn Turf Course.
