Former Owner Carl Maggio Dies at 59

Carmelo (Carl) Joseph Maggio, who raced several graded stakes winners in California in the 1980s, died Oct. 31 from brain cancer. He was 59.
Maggio, a Los Angeles native, owned and operated Maggio Inc., a family agribusiness that grows, harvests, packs, and ships vegetables.
Many of his best horses were purchased in Argentina and Chile and imported to the U.S. Among them was multiple graded stakes winner Marisma and graded stakes winner and grade I stakes-placed Cat Girl,.
Maggio's father, Joe, was in the horse business before dispersing in the 1970s. Maggio became involved in 1978 and at one time operated California Oaks Farm east of San Diego.
His survivors include his wife, Lisa Greathouse Maggio; sons Joseph, Carl, Anthony and Vincent Maggio; daughter Kristen Maggio; and stepsons John and Benjamin Greathouse.
A rosary service will be held at 7 p.m. Thursday at Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Church in La Jolla, Calif., with the funeral mass at 2 p.m. Friday.
