Louisville, Ky. (March 5, 2001) -- The second of three pools in Churchill Downs' 2001 Kentucky Derby Future Wager is scheduled to open Thursday, March 8. The mutuel field, which represents all 3-year-old Thoroughbreds other than the 23 individual horses listed in the pool, is expected to again attract strong support.

The mutuel field was a 3-1 favorite at the end of Pool 1 and Churchill Downs handicapper Mike Battaglia has installed that wagering interest as the 5-1 favorite for this week's pool, which opens at noon (EST) on Thursday and will close at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, March 11. The Thoroughbred Corp.'s Point Given, who closed as the 7-1 second choice in Pool 1, occupies that spot again in the Pool 2 morning line at odds of 6-1. Next in line are Mary and Gary West's Dollar Bill at 8-1, Millennium Wind at 10-1, and a pair of 12-1 shots: A P Valentine, owned by basketball coach Rick Pitino's Celtic Pride Stable, and Street Cry, an Irish-bred, Dubai-based colt owned by Godolphin Racing.

The Kentucky Derby Future Wager allows racing fans to place wagers on contenders for the Kentucky Derby weeks in advance at odds that may be more attractive than those they would receive on Derby Day. The Kentucky Derby Future Wager is a $2 minimum wager and is a win bet only. Pool 3 of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager is scheduled for April 5-8.

"The fans have solidly backed the mutuel field in the early pools of the Kentucky Derby Future Wager in its first two years and I think they'll do it again in this week's Pool 2," said Battaglia. "The Derby picture remains as wide open at this stage as it has been in several years and few of the top contenders have raced enough this year for the fans to form any strong opinions."

Five new names that were not included in Pool 1 of the 2001 Future Wager are listed among the wagering interests for Pool 2. They are: Crafty C.T., a dazzling winner of the San Rafael (gr. II) at Santa Anita for trainer Howard Zucker; Congaree, a son of Arazi who recently scored an impressive maiden win for trainer Bob Baffert at Santa Anita; Scorpion, one of last year's outstanding juveniles and an impressive allowance winner in his 3-year-old debut for trainer D. Wayne Lukas; Strike It Smart, a flashy winner of his last two races at the Fair Grounds for trainer Al Stall Jr.; and You Know Who, a stretch-running Todd Pletcher-trainee who has won three consecutive races.

Horses listed in Pool 1 but omitted from Pool 2 include Buckle Down Ben, Meetyouathebrig, Mongoose, Ommadon, and Talk Is Money.

Trainers Bob Baffert and John Ward, Jr. are each represented by three horses among the individual wagering interests in Pool 2. Baffert, a two-time Kentucky Derby-winner, is represented by Point Given, Global Gait, and newcomer Congaree. Ward trains Monarchos, Hero's Tribute, and Holiday Thunder. Lukas (Gold Trader, Scorpion) and Todd Pletcher (Invisible Ink, You Know Who) are represented by two horses.

Fans at racetracks and satellite outlets in a record 28 states wagered $510,815 in Pool 1 of the 2001 Kentucky Derby Future Wager during its four-day run from Feb. 15-18. The total was the largest for a single pool in the history of the Future Wager, which was offered for the first time in 1999, and marked the first time that a single pool had exceeded the $500,000 mark. Total wagering for all three pools in 2000 was a record $1,158,919 - up from the $676,233 wagered on all three pools in 1999.

The wagering interests for Pool 1 were chosen by a three-member committee that includes John Asher, Vice President, Racing Communications at Churchill Downs; Mike Watchmaker, National Handicapper for the Daily Racing Form; and Brad Free, a Daily Racing Form West Coast Correspondent.

Churchill Downs will conduct the 127th running of the Kentucky Derby on May 5, 2001. The 2001 Spring Meet at Churchill Downs is scheduled for April 28-July 8. Information about Churchill Downs can be found on the Internet at www.kentuckyderby.com. Kentucky Derby Future Wager Statistics
