Buzzards Bay, Scipion Return in Discovery H.
Santa Anita Derby (gr. I) winner Buzzards Bay, off since June, returns to action on the Breeders' Cup undercard at Belmont Park Saturday in the $250,000-added Emirates Airline Discovery Handicap (gr. III) for three-year-olds.In his first start for trainer Ron Ellis, Buzzards Bay faces 10 rivals in the 1 1/16-mile event, which features Risen Star (gr. III) winner Scipion and Preakness (gr. I) runner-up Scrappy T. There are plenty of new shooters as well - Watchmon, Spanish Mission and War Front - who have all looked strong in their respective victories the fall Belmont meet.Buzzards Bay ran fifth in the Kentucky Derby (gr. I) following his 30-1 shocker at Santa Anita. He went to the sidelines after a fourth-place finish in the Affirmed (gr. III) June 18.The rebounding Scipion was knocked out of action with a condylar fracture after a sixth-pace finish in the Louisiana Derby (gr. II) in March.Scrappy T, the colt that nearly caused Afleet Alex to fall when he slammed into him at the top of the stretch in the Preakness, makes his second start off an extended four month layoff for trainer Robert Bailes. Scrappy T finished second in the Indiana Derby (gr. II) earlier this month, his first start since his Preakness effort. After finishing ninth of 11 to Afleet Alex in the Belmont Stakes (gr. I), Watchmon underwent surgery to remove a non-descended testicle. He's been flawless since his return to the races in late August, winning three straight times. Watchmon notched his first stakes victory earlier this month with a comfortable win in Belmont's off-the-turf Jamaica.War Front could be the most interesting horse in the Discovery for trainer H. Allen Jerkens. A colt by Danzig, War Front has won his first and only three starts for Jerkens by a combined 25 ½ lengths. And even though he was right on top of a :23 3/5 and :47 1/5 pace in his restricted Princelet win earlier this month, War Front appeared to rate comfortably beneath jockey Jose Santos."I thought he had a shot to get discouraged there," said Jerkens. "I was really happy he didn't. I hope he can keep doing it. He could be a really good horse next year. It remains to be seen if he can do it with the good ones. He's going to have to show up."$250,000-added Emirates Airline Discovery Handicap (gr. III), 3-year-olds, 1 1/16 miles
