Pomeroy, winner of the A. G. Vanderbilt at Saratoga, was scratched from the Breeders' Cup Sprint Wednesday morning.
Several hours before final entries were taken and post positions were drawn for Saturday's Breeders' Cup World Thoroughbred Championships, Pomeroy was withdrawn from the TVG Sprint (gr. I).
The son of Boundary
was scratched after he worked over the Polytrack at Turfway Park Wednesday morning. Following the work, trainer Patrick Biancone detected something not right with his left front.
The winner of six of 15 starts, including the A. G. Vanderbilt (gr. II) at Saratoga, Pomeroy has earned $595,050 for owners Michael B. Tabor and Derrick Smith.
The defection was the only development at Belmont on a brisk, sunny morning.
The only horse scheduled to work Wednesday morning was Alberto VO5 Distaff (gr. I) contender Happy Ticket, who breezed over the training track after the maintenance break.
The main track was still sloppy Wednesday morning, and plastic cones were placed from the rail to about mid-track to keep horses from working close to the inside part of the track. Depending upon the area, the first Nor'easter of the year produced from 1 1/2 to 2 1/2 inches of rain and wind gusts to 50 miles per hour. The forecast is for a chance of rain Thursday and Friday and partly cloudy skies on Breeders' Cup day.
With Wednesday's pre-dawn temperature a brisk 40 degrees and wind that produced a wind-chill index of 33, among the first horses on the track were Imperialism and Shakespeare. Wednesday was the first day that Cup horses wore the distinctive Breeders' Cup saddlecloths, making it easier for fans and observers to identify them.
Meanwhile, connections of the pre-entered horses were awaiting the important final entry and post position draw, scheduled for 11 a.m. (ET). HRTV was scheduled to televise the draw live, and TVG will show the post positions with a scrawl at the bottom of the screen.
The post positions will be posted immediately at bloodhorse.com
