The Jockey Club: 58,739 Mares Bred in 2005

The Jockey Club released their Report of Mares Bred in 2005 Thursday morning and report that 58,739 mares were covered by 3,097 stallions this year. The released data is reports that have been received through Oct. 13.

The statistics represent approximately 90% of the mares bred in 2005. Based on historical trends, The Jockey Club expects to receive another 800-1,000 RMBs by year's end.

The number of stallions--3,097--declined 4.4% from the 3,239 reported last year, while the number of mares bred decreased 1% from the 59,342 reported at this time last year.

The number of stallions covering 100 or more mares increased from 117 last year to 126 this year. In 2003, 108 stallions covered 100 or more mares. The 126 stallions are reported to have covered 15,971 mares, or 27.2% of all mares reported.

Four stallions covered more than 200 mares, and all four stallions stand at Ashford Stud near Versailles, Ky. First-year stallion Lion Heart covered a record 233 mares this year, followed by Chapel Royal with 222. Giant's Causeway  , the leading sire of 2-year-olds this year and a top 10 leading sire in North America with just two crops of racing age, covered 215 mares. Fusaichi Pegasus   rounded out the double-century club with 213 mares bred this year.

Ashford Stud holds seven of the top 10 spots. Rounding out the top 10 are: Monashee Mountain (194; Ashford), Johannesburg (190, Ashford), Medaglia d'Oro   (184; stood at Hill 'n' Dale near Lexington in 2005), Tale of the Cat   (179; Ashford), Malibu Moon   (175, Castleton-Lyons near Lexington), and Candy Ride and Peace Rules (170, Hill 'n' Dale and Vinery Stud near Summerfield, Fla., respectively).

Eighty-six of the century club members stood in Kentucky, down from 91 last year. The number of stallions in Florida that covered 100 or more mares was 22. California (six), Maryland (four), New York (three), and Arkansas, Louisiana, Ontario, Texas, and Utah had one each.

"Although we haven't received reports for about a quarter of all stallions despite the requested Aug. 1 submission date, the RMBs submitted to date indicate a continuation of the trend toward larger stallion book sizes," said Matt Iuliano, The Jockey Club's vice president of registration services. "Historically, this trend is accompanied by an increase in live foal and registration percentages which would support our previously announced forecast of 37,300 registered foals for 2006."
