Cathy and Bob Zollar's entry of Jazzy Gallop and Real Dandy figure to be favored when a field of 10 vie in the $150,000 Oklahoma Derby at Remington Park Friday.
Steve Asmussen trains the pair, listed at 2-1 on the morning line in the Oklahoma Derby, which headlines the richest program of the season at Remington.
Real Dandy is the more accomplished of the two, having won the $750,000 West Virginia Derby (gr. III) in August. He has amassed more than $725,000 in earnings through his 17-race career with three wins, six places and two shows. He drew post-position seven while Jazzy Gallop starts from post one.
Jockey Luis Quinonez has been named on both parts of the entry. Quinonez won his first Oklahoma Derby last year with 33-1 longshot Wally's Choice. If he could win again this year, he would become the first rider to win the race in two consecutive years.
Asmussen set a national training record for wins in 2004 with more than 500 for the year. He currently leads the national standings again with nearly 378 scores through Monday racing.
Cash Is King Stables has entered a stablemate of Afleet Alex, Golden Rainbow. Trainer Tim Ritchey conditions and jockey Jeremy Rose will come in to ride.
Out of the money only once in his 11-race career, Golden Rainbow recently won an allowance event at Delaware Park. That effort put him back on the winning track after finishing ninth in the Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) on Labor Day.
Military Major represents the powerful Kinsman Stable of New York Yankees boss George Steinbrenner. Trained by Michael Caraman, Military Major has been campaigned at Louisiana Downs in Bossier City, La., and ran fourth in the recent $750,000 Super Derby (gr. II). $150,000 Oklahoma Derby (Race 9, 10:13 p.m.), 3-year-olds, 1 1/8 miles
