Jerry Bailey, may get the mount on Ouija Board.
By Ron Mitchell and
Steve HaskinWhen Lord Derby's Ouija Board seeks to defend her title in the Emirates Airline Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) Oct. 29, she could have the services of Jerry Bailey, whose 14 wins is first among all jockeys in World Thoroughbred Championships history.
Bailey's agent, Ron Anderson, said it is only a possibility that Bailey will be aboard the
Cape Cross filly as her two regular riders – Frankie Dettori and Kieren Fallon – are the number one riders for trainers with other horses likely to be pre-entered in the Filly & Mare Turf. Dettori is the main jock for trainer Saeed bin Suroor and Godolphin Racing, which owns contender Sundrop, and Fallon rides for trainer Aidan O'Brien, who conditions Michael Tabor and Susan Magnier's Mona Lisa.
While Bailey's status for Ouija Board is still uncertain, his other commitments have been firmed up. They are:
--Sweet Symphony, Emirates Airlines Breeders' Cup Distaff (gr. I)
--First Samurai, Bessemer Trust Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I)
--Saint Liam, Breeders' Cup Classic – Powered by Dodge (gr. I)
--High Fly, TVG Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I)
--Sand Springs, Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT) (if not on Ouija Board)
--Original Spin, VO5 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies (gr. I)
Meanwhile, Pat Valenzuela, one of the leading West Coast jocks, is likely to have mounts in five Breeders' Cup races. They are:
--Starcraft, Classic
-- Ace, John Deere Breeders' Cup Turf (gr. IT), contingent upon confirmation
--Film Maker, Filly & Mare Turf
--Estate Collection, Sprint
--Hollywood Story, Distaff
Like Bailey, P Val is among the leading Breeders' Cup rider, with seven victories from 46 starters.
