Riskaverse won her second consecutive Flower Bowl in early October.
With two grade I victories and earnings of more than $1.5, no one would have been surprised had trainer Patrick Kelly and owner Peter Schiff retired Riskaverse after the 2004 Breeders' Cup Filly & Mare Turf (gr. IT). But with the event returning to Belmont Park in 2005, they decided on another season of racing for the 6-year-old mare.
Riskaverse has raced in the last three editions of the Filly & Mare Turf with little fanfare, finishing seventh in 2002, sixth in 2003, and eighth in 2004.
She hadn't done much with her extra season until she defeated Wonder Again and a top notch field in the Flower Bowl Invitational (gr. IT) two weeks ago on a Belmont Park turf course she loves. Riskaverse is the only horse in history to win multiple runnings of the Flower Bowl.
Now Riskaverse is headed for the $1 million Emirates Airline Filly & Mare Turf once again. She is likely to work early this week.
"I haven't done much training with her," Kelly said. "I want to breeze her on the turf, but I won't breeze her on it if it's soft. We'll probably just work on the dirt.
"She was training good going into the Flower Bowl. She lost a lot of time over the summer, and I shouldn't have run her in the Ballston Spa. She's a classy old girl."
Riskaverse will be only the third horse in Breeders' Cup history to compete in the same race four consecutive years. Kona Gold, the 2000 BC Sprint winner, holds the record, having raced in the Sprint five consecutive years. El Senor is currently second, having raced in the BC Turf four straight times.
