Vicarage took the lead after a quarter mile and drew away to a 10-length victory in the $200,000 Perryville Stakes (gr. III) for 3-year-olds Friday at Keeneland.

It was the fourth win in 14 career starts for the son of Vicar. He ran the seven furlongs, 184 feet in 1:26.06 while increasing his career earnings to $392,645.

Vicarage overcame Diligent Prospect early in the race, and it was no contest after that as 16,743 watched under sunny skies.

"He broke running today," said winning jockey John Velazquez. "Jon (Court aboard Diligent Prospect) gave us the rail, and he went right up in there without any problem.

"When he switched down the lane, he went to running. When he shows up, he runs huge. He showed up today."

Straight Line, winner of the Iroquois Stakes (gr. III) last fall at Churchill Downs, finished second, 2 1/2 lengths in front of third-place Social Probation. Diligent Prospect, the 17-10 favorite who had won three of his fourth starts, faded to last in the field of eight 3-year-olds.

Vicarage, who is owned by Dogwood Stable and is trained by Todd Pletcher, paid $11, $6.40, and $4.20 as the third choice.

"That was fabulous," said Dogwood Stable's Cot Campbell. "He doesn't want to sprint, and he doesn't want to go long. We're kind of betwixt and between. This was his ideal distance."

Straight Line returned $10.40 and $4.80, and Social Probation paid $2.80.
