Robert N. Scanlon, a perennial leading 2-year-old sale consignor and operator of the Scanlon Training Center near Williston, Fla., passed away Oct. 13.
Along with his wife Connie, and son David, Scanlon broke and provided the early training for many top Thoroughbreds. Sales graduates from the Scanlon Training Center include Afleet Alex, the 2005 Preakness and Belmont winner, both grade I; Lion Heart, the 2004 Haskell (gr. I) winner; Songandaprayer
, a grade I winner and a leading 2005 freshman sire; Unbridled's Song
, a Breeders' Cup Juvenile (gr. I) winner and leading sire; and Artax
, a champion and Breeders' Cup Sprint (gr. I) winner.
Earlier this year, a horse sold by Scanlon shattered the record for a 2-year-old in training sold at public auction when he sold a Tale of the Cat
colt out of Carry All for $5.2 million.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, David and Rob (and his wife Melissa) and grandson Ryley; his mother, Nellie; three brothers, Lee, Jimmy and Liam; and three sisters, Betty, Marlene and Helen.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, October 18th at Blessed Trinity Catholic Church, 5 S.E. 17th Street, Ocala, Florida, followed by a gathering of family and friends at Golden Ocala Country Club.
In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the American Cancer Society or Hospice of North Central Florida, 4200 N.W. 90th Boulevard, Gainesville, FL 32606.
