Field of 11 Turf Specialists in Kilroe Mile

A field of 11 older turf runners have entered for Saturday's 42nd running of the Frank E. Kilroe Mile on the Camino Real turf course.

Formerly run as the Arcadia Handicap, the race was renamed in 2001 to honor longtime Southern California racing secretary 'Jimmy' Kilroe.

Trainer Wally Dollase, who registered his first victory of the meeting Feb. 17 in the San Luis Obispo Handicap with longshot Persianlux, has entered English-bred Yaralino in the hope that lightning can strike twice.

"A flat mile might be a little short for him but weĆre going to give it a shot," Dollase said. "I'm just hoping he's as good as his half-brother."

Yaralino's half-brother is Beat Hollow, a Group I winner in France. Out of the 1993 Irish Oaks winner Wemyss Bight, Yaralino has won four of 12 career starts for earnings of $169,714, including a 4 ?-length win in the Tanforan Handicap on a yielding Golden Gate turf course Feb. 4. Dollase said that the recent inclement weather should work in his favor.

"He should like the soft going," said Dollase. "He'll move up with a little 'cut in the ground' as the British like to say. But Hollycombe has the speed and is the one I'm worried about."

Yaralino has drawn post position No. 8 and the riding services of Victor Espinoza.

Hollycombe has been plagued by foot problems throughout his career which was the motivating factor to try him on the turf in his last start, a nose defeat to Hawksley Hill in a one-mile conditioned allowance event Feb. 9.

'So far, so good,' said Gonzalez, knocking on the wooden stall superstitiously. 'His feet are doing very good now.'

Hollycombe, a lightly-raced 7-year-old Kentucky-bred by Capote, has won five of 10 starts for earnings of $297,653.
