Real Dandy Heads Wide Open Super Derby

Real Dandy, whose earnings for the year of $667,990 are more than the lifetime earnings of any of the other nine contestants in Saturday's Super Derby XXVI (gr. II), heads into the 1 1/4-mile Louisiana Downs race as the sole graded stakes winner of the group. But that doesn't mean the others lack serious credentials in the race worth $750,000.

Real Dandy, who will tote the same 124 pounds as his other rivals in the 26th running, captured the West Virginia Derby (gr. III) two races back and placed in four stakes earlier this year, three of which were graded. He goes into the race off a fifth-place finish in Sun King's Pennsylvania Derby (gr. II) Sept. 5. Shaun Bridgmohan will ride him for the first time.

Local favorite Royal Saint should get plenty of support by virtue of his unbeaten record at Louisiana Downs. He won the Sept. 5 Prelude Stakes for his fourth straight win there and gets the return services of rider Guy Smith.

Silver Haze also should receive support from the locals. He won the Bossier City Handicap and Excalibur Stakes at Louisiana Downs this year and was third in the Prelude. E.J. Perrodin will ride him again

The 1 1/4-mile distance will be new for most of the entries, but not for two of the contestants. Nolan's Cat finished second at that distance in a maiden race at Churchill Downs and ran third in the 1 1/2-mile Belmont Stakes (gr. I). He goes into the race off a maiden score at nine furlongs at Saratoga.

A. P. Arrow won that 1 1/4-mile maiden race in which Nolan's Cat ran second, but finished fifth in the Belmont. He won a Saratoga allowance last time out.

The Super Derby will the first two-turn race for The Daddy. Winner of his first two starts, including a 12-length score at Saratoga, The Daddy ran fourth to unbeaten speedster Lost in the Fog in the King's Bishop (gr. I) at seven furlongs at Saratoga.

The Super Derby field also consists of Smokescreen, third in the Pennsylvania Derby, and Desert Breeze, Kilates Kiss, and Military Major
