Fog City Stables' grade I winner Roman Ruler will not make the trip to New York for Saturday's Jockey Club Gold Cup (gr. I), trainer Bob Baffert said, and will instead run in the $500,000 Goodwood Breeders' Cup Handicap (gr. II) at Oak Tree at Santa Anita on the same day.

Roman Ruler, who worked a half-mile in :48 2/5 over a fast track at Santa Anita on Wednesday, was set to leave for New York on Thursday morning with stablemate Woke Up Dreamin, who is a candidate for Saturday's Vosburgh (gr. I).

"If I ship him and run him 1 ΒΌ miles against older horses, he'll have nothing left for the Breeders' Cup," Baffert said. "He'll be cooked. I just got to thinking about it and decided it was better to leave him here. Plus, the six-hour quarantine at Belmont Park really takes a lot out of them. So it would be a lot to ask of him to run there because he'd have to come back here because of the weather and then ship all the way back again four weeks later. That's a tough field to have to ask him to do all that.

"Now he can walk right out of his stall and walk right over (to the race). This is a really good field, too. And I can find out right here if he can run against older horses and have something left (for the Breeders' Cup.)"

Roman Ruler will take on Rock Hard Ten in the Goodwood. Rock Hard Ten, making his first start Saturday since winning the Santa Anita Handicap (gr. I) in March, worked three furlongs in :34 4/5 Wednesday for trainer Richard Mandella.

Hall of Fame jockey Jerry Bailey was set to ride the bay 3-year-old son of Fusaichi Pegasus   in the Jockey Club Gold Cup, but won't be making the trip to California for the Goodwood.

"I don't know yet (who will ride)," Baffert said. "But it'll probably be David Flores."

Haskell Invitational Handicap (gr. I) winner Roman Ruler last raced on Aug. 27, finishing third behind Flower Alley and Bellamy Road in the Travers Stakes (gr. I). Roman Ruler has a 5-1-1 record from nine career starts with earnings of $1,120,800.

The last 3-year-old to win the Goodwood was Tiznow in 2000. He went on to win the Breeders' Cup Classic and earn Horse of the Year honors.
