Keeneland Day 12: Gross, Average, Median Rise Again

Keeneland's marathon September yearling sale entered its final three days on Saturday and registered across-the-board gains for the 10th time in the first 12 sessions of the 14-day auction.

The key statistics from Saturday were:
-- 249 horses sold for a gross of $3,703,600, up a whopping 24.3% from the same session last year when 215 sold for $2,979,100.
-- The average price of $14,874 was 7.3% higher than last year's average of $13,856.
-- The median rose by 25.0% from $8,000 to $10,000.
-- Eighty-one yearlings of the 330 through the ring (24.5%) failed to meet their reserve price, compared with 21.8% RNA last year.

California-based agent Richard Matlow purchased the day's top-priced offering when he went to $85,000 for a daughter of Notebook out of Cut n' Double, by Cutlass. The filly is a full sister to West Virgnia Oaks winner Elise's Notebook. She was consigned by Taylor Made Sales Agency, as agent, the leading consignor for the session and the sale. For the day, Taylor Made sold 24 head for $400,700, an average of $16,695.

The Nicholasville, Ky, outfit has sold 10.9% of the September sale's 3,168 yearling purchased thus far. Taylor Made has sold 345 yearlings for $60,879,200, an average of $176,461. Taylor Made's sales account for 16.0% of the September sales gross receipts through the first 12 days.

The Keeneland September yearling sale established its highest gross ever last Monday in the early portion of the seventh session. Through Saturday's 12th session, the cumulative figures are:

-- 3,168 horses sold, up 4.4% from the 3,034 at this stage last year.
-- The gross of $380,801,000 is up 18.5% from the $321,224,800 through day 12 last year.
-- The average price of $120,202 is 13.5% higher than $105,875 in 2004.
-- The median of $47,000 is 4.4% higher than last year's $45,000.
-- The cumulative RNA rate is 21.8%, with 884 horses failing to sell. Last year's RNA rate through 12 days was 22.8% (898 RNA of 3,932 offered).
